Lady Braves soccer banquet reflects on another great season

The Braves wrapped up their 2016 CHL championship season with a heartbreaking tight loss to eventual State champion Alter. After holding a 1-0 advantage for most of the first half, thanks to Anna Podojil’s 31st goal of the season (tying an all time record for IH soccer), the Braves gave up a pair of set piece goals...one late in the first half, and another midway through the second. Senior Ellie Schaub kept it tight with a trio of spectacular late saves, while the front line just missed on a couple late opportunities of their own. In the end, the injury-depleted and exhausted ladies gave it all, but just missed.

It was a brutal tourney draw for the Braves. Besides #2 ranked Alter (and #1 McNick waiting down the road), the ladies had to face a Monroe team that was 13-2 coming in, and always dangerous Fenwick. But both games saw the Braves dominate, with the defense clamping down all over the field (allowing only 4 shots on goal in total), while the “PodoShow” lit up the scoreboard on offense, as Anna had back to back 4-goal games (the second time she’d done that this year), with the help of multiple assists from younger sister Ellie. Morgan Jackson and Margo David added some great goals of their own, as the team played some of its best soccer of the year.

There were lots to recognize in the annual team banquet (including everyone’s favorite part, the Dave Lawson open mike night and “Law’s Awards”). 27 ladies in the program received CHL scholar-athlete recognition. All CHL honorable mention recognition went to Bea Fries and Lily Lance. Three Braves were named 2nd team all-CHL: Maddie Cech, Claire deHamel, and Ellie Schaub; and three were 1st team selections: Morgan Jackson, Ellie Podojil, and Anna Podojil. Those three, and Ellie Schaub, were also named to the Southwest Ohio team, with Morgan and Anna making the first-team all-Ohio squad. And in fitting recognition, the coaches of the “Duct Tape & Chewing Gum” gang, Amy Dunlap and Dave Lawson, were named Southwest Ohio and State of Ohio Coaches of the year!

Those of us who had the pleasure of watching these ladies grow together and support one another this season will not forget so many of the magic moments we were privileged to be a part of, especially the ones that came courtesy of our outstanding pair of seniors (here’s a shameless reminder to see Ellie and Lily torch more opponents at basketball and lacrosse games this winter & spring). Your fans are looking forward to a fantastic 2017 season, with wishes for some legs to heal up soon; for phones and Go-Pros to avoid the bottom of the little Miami; and for Maddie Cech to remember where Claire lives when she drives past her house...again.
