Anna Podojil adds another honor to her athletic list

INDIAN HILL - Space is getting tight in the Podjil family trophy case as Anna Podojil of Indian Hill High School has added a national championship at the U17 level in soccer.

Playing with her Cincinnati United Premier team in Texas, Podojil was one of the several locals to bring home the hardware from Texas in the U.S. Youth Soccer Association tournament.

In addition, she was awarded the Golden Ball trophy for having the most impact in the tournament. It was a family affair for the Podojils as Anna's younger sister, Ellie's CUP team finished third overall. The warmer months have been fruitful for Anna as she also was invited to practice with the U18 U.S. Women's National Team in late spring.

Two other Cincinnati-area girls among the locals on the talented CUP squad played a huge role in the 0-0 (5-3 on penalty kicks) USYSA title game against Midwest United of Michigan. Mimi Stines of Summit Country Day had the clinching save and Becky Dean of Mount Notre Dame had the go-ahead PK score. Britney Duncan of Indian Hill was also on the squad.

"It was amazing and an awesome way to end our season," Anna Podojil said. "They're some of my best friends. It was also sad at the same time because that was the last time we're playing with each other. We made all five kicks (Anna included) and our goalie (Stines) saved their fourth shot. It was a really stressful and long game."

The penalty kicks came about after 90 minutes of play and a pair of 15-minute overtimes.

The Podojil sisters have been busy since the spring when both were starring on coach Susan Savage's Indian Hill track team. Both made the Division II state meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Anna was the state champion in the 200 meters, runner-up in the 400 and was third in the 100 meters, along with running the 4x200 relay with her sister. Ellie Podojil qualified as a freshman in the 300-meter hurdles.

In Anna's freshman soccer season under coach Amy Dunlap at Indian Hill, she was second on the team and league in scoring behind Morgan Jackson. Last season, she led the Cincinnati Hills League with 73 points on 31 goals and 11 assists with Ellie finishing second on the team and seventh in the CHL with 31 points (8 goals and 15 assists from midfield).

Recently, Ellie joined Anna by committing to play soccer at the University of Arkansas. Before moving to Indian Hill, the Podojils resided in Bentonville, Arkansas, the home of Wal-Mart. On the soccer field, the sisters are quite the bargain with their mix of scoring and speed.

"It was a big factor," Anna Podojil said when asked if location swayed her decision to kick the round ball for the Razorbacks. "It felt like going home."

Though glad to be playing with her sister beyond Indian Hill, Anna plans to let Ellie seek her own roommate in Fayetteville. A childhood friend from Arkansas also recently committed to play soccer and learn the "Pig Sooie" chant.

While the Podojils will be back for the Lady Braves, several girls will bypass the prep game for the new Cincinnati Development Academy sponsored by FC Cincinnati. CUP and Kings Hammer have also teamed up in the venture.

Armed with Division I offers early in their high school careers, the Podojils are content to remain Lady Braves and lead their soccer team to yet another CHL championship (they have won or shared the last four).

"I love high school," Anna Podojil said. "Some girls have to make a hard decision."

In addition to seeking another state track title in the spring, Anna is also bouncing around the idea of playing basketball. Not shockingly, reports are her dribbling of the orange ball is also superlative.
