Regional Champs Again As Braves Dominate Tipp To Reach Final 4

Another blustery day saw another Braves tournament victory on Saturday afternoon in Centerville, as the team continued its roll, this time over Tippecanoe. Unlike the 2-1 season opener over Tipp on the road, which was a nip and tuck affair that was decided on a Brynn Wirthlin rebound goal with 4 minutes left, this one was all Indian Hill early on. The Braves dominated possession in their offensive end throughout the first half. An Anna Podijil goal 2 minutes in that was negated by an erroneous (got it on film) offside call.  Margo David crashing a bomb off the crossbar only two minutes later from 25 yards out was just some of the early Braves’ fireworks.

Morgan Jackson finally got them on the board just over 10 minutes in with a strong header, benefitting from outside back Maddie Miller’s steal and subsequent lob into the middle. The strong offense continued, with Bea Fries getting stopped by the Tipp goalie on a point blank shot 18 minutes in and again with 12 minutes left in the half, and Ellie Podojil just missing on a header from a Claire deHamel free kick.

It was just a matter of time before more shots started falling. With 7 minutes left in the half, Margo David got the Braves their second score of the day with another long range shot from the left side that sailed over the goalie’s head, and Morgan followed that up two minutes later, taking a laser pass from Anna Podojil on a fast break for another score – even though Tippecanoe's goalie did manage to get her left hand on the ball. Kate Marrs made spectacular diving saves of two bang-bang point blank Tipp shots right before halftime, and the Braves took a 3-0 lead into the break.

Indian Hill cooled off somewhat in the second period for the second game in a row, although Morgan got a hat trick with her third score, on a breakaway 10 minutes in, while Anna and Morgan just missed on a few other attempts in the half. Tipp shifted to more bodies in the attacking third, and the Braves transitioned into more of a clock killing “prevent” mentality as the last 20 minutes wore on. The back line got a ton of work in those last 20 minutes as Tipp grew desperate and the Braves milked the clock, subbing regularly. Tipp finally got on the board with 9 minutes left – the first goal the Braves had given up in regular play in the entire tournament. As the clock ticked down, the team began to celebrate its 6th overall trip to the Final Four, and the 4th in the past 8 years.

NOTES: The Braves next opponent it Sunbury Big Walnut, to be played Tuesday, November 7th at 7:00 pm at Kettering Fairmont HS, 3301 Shroyer Road in Kettering. Please come out to give our ladies great support as they try to advance to the title game for the first time since 2004.
