Braves Upset #1 Seed New Richmond To Advance To District Finals

In a game spanning 2 days, rain delays, extra innings and 2 fields in different parts of town, the Indian Hill Braves defeated New Richmond on Friday (May 19) 11-7.

Chandler Harris pitching for the first time all season picked up the win by throwing a scoreless 9th and 10th innings for the victorious Braves.

The game began at Oak Hills High School on Thursday (5/18).

New Richmond's flame thrower, Lane Flamm struck out 7 Brave hitters in 3 innings and left the game with a 4-0 lead.

The Braves popped a 3 spot on the board once the pitching change took place in the top of the 4th with RBI's by seniors Max Sweeney and Keith Hammond.

New Richmond matched that in the bottom of the 5th with 3 runs of their own to seemingly put the game out of reach and take a 7-3 lead into the 7th.

Harris lead off the 7th with a double which was quickly followed by an Andrew Brockoff double, a Seth Brafford walk, a Winston Caine double, a Max Sweeney walk and an Ian Book walk to tie the game at 7 all.

New Richmond then reinserted their ace, Flamm, back into the game to stop the bleeding.

At the end of the 8th inning with the score still tied, the umpires suspended the game to be continued the next day at Princeton High School.

The game was delayed by rain, thunder and lightening but eventually started and both sides went down without scoring in the 9th.

In the top of the 10th Harris led off with a base hit and it was game on for Indian Hill.

A.J. King reached base on an error, Brockoff walked and seldom used Freshman, David Heilbrunn was hit by a pitch that brought home what would be the game winning RBI.

The Braves however, were not finished hitting. Caine continued the inning with a single knocking in 2 more runs and a Joe Oakes out brought home one more.

Harris retired the New Richmond side in order in the 10th and Indian Hill advanced to its' first District Championship game since 1993.

Harris finished the game with 3 hits while Max Sweeney and Winston Caine had 2 hits each. Caine also knocked in 4 runs.

Andrew Brockoff had one hit and 5 walks, just one walk shy of the state tournament record.

The Braves need to regroup as they play again on Saturday morning for the District Championship against the #3 ranked team in the state, the Ross Rams, at 11am at Mason High School.
