Boys LAX Axes the Oakwood Jacks

April 15, 2017-On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Historic Tomahawk Stadium, the IH Men’s Lacrosse team defeated the Oakwood Lumberjacks 13-4. The win is the fourth in a row for the Braves, and the squad improved to 4-2 on the season.

The Braves started strong, scoring 4 goals in the first quarter while only allowing just 1. Junior midfielder Alex Major jump-started the offense, scoring the first goal at one minute twenty-six seconds into the contest, on an assist from sophomore Wyatt Fruland. Senior Ryan Fixler scored next off a feed from sophomore Zander Johnston.

The final Braves goal of quarter would later be described by Mike Taylor, father of Owen Taylor, as “the prettiest goal I’ve see in Indian Hill lacrosse in four years.” Junior goalie Brook McClay passed to midfielder Alex Major. Catching Oakwood subbing, Major hit Owen Taylor on the fast-break clear. Drawing the point man, Taylor passed down to Fix who drew the Oakwood slide, and hit Fruland with a cross-field pass. Fruland, detecting the second slide, hit Johnston for the shoot-and-score on a perfectly executed fast-break. Setting the tone early in a physical game, 8 different Braves collected 10 ground balls in the quarter to the Lumberjacks’ 6. McClay had 3 saves as the defense held off a potent Oakwood offense.

The second quarter started with yet another IH midfielder scoring, this time by junior captain Jimmy Brunette, who was assisted on the play by fellow junior middie Eric Pfluhaupt. Fixler would score 33 seconds later on another Pfluhaupt assist. Fruland ended the quarter with a dodge and an unassisted goal, a missile shot launched from 10 yards out. The D held strong, holding Oakwood to a single score and shutting them out on two man-down opportunities and adding 6 GB to the Jacks’ 2. The Braves took a 7-2 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter the Braves and Lumberjacks traded goals, with each team scoring 2. The Braves tallies were by senior captain Owen Taylor and junior midfielder Bryn Irvine. The team added 11 ground balls to Oakwood’s 2. Henry Mayeux, starting the quarter in goal, made 6 key saves and the Braves led 9-4.

The Braves rolled in the fourth quarter, taking advantage fast play, which prevented the Jacks middies from subbing. The Braves D held Oakwood scoreless, while adding 1 goal from sophomore midfielder Cole Werbrich, 2 from Taylor, and 1 from Johnston. Patrick Farist, who won 50% of face-offs in the first half, dominated in the second half winning 9 of the last 10 to end the day at 68% (15 of 22) and 3 GB. The defense and sophomore goalie Henry Mayeux had their second straight game with a fourth quarter shutout. Final score Braves 13, Oakwood 4.

The Braves defense was stellar all day. Goalie Mayeux nabbed 9 saves and allowed only 2 goals while playing the second half. Junior Brook McClay, playing the first half in goal, collected 6 saves and allowed only 2 goals against. Playing the second half at LSM, McClay added 4 GB to his statistics. Matt Sorensen also collected 4 GB and had 1 forced turnover. The team had 37 GB in the match.

The offense demonstrated the number of weapons in its arsenal at the expense of the Lumberjacks defense as ten players collected points. The highlight of the day on offense was senior captain and defenseman Matt Sorensen’s field-clearing assist in the fourth quarter. Fellow senior captain Owen Taylor continued his torrid scoring campaign of ‘17, leading the Braves with 4 points on 4 goals while also grabbing 4 GB. Sophomore attackman Zander Johnston added 4 points (2G/2A) and 3 GB. The attack unit had 6 caused turnovers, with each Ryan Fixler, Wyatt Fruland, and Johnston with 2 demonstrating IH’s vicious ride. Fruland, Enquirer player of the week for his 8-point performance against Fenwick on April 8th, had 3 points (1G/2A) and 4 GB. Fixler (2G, 1GB) and Eric Pfluhaupt (2A, 2GB) each notched 2 Points. Alex Major, who jump-started the Braves offense with, had 1 goal, as did each of his fellow middies Jimmy Brunette, Bryn Irvine, and Cole Werbrich.
