Noah Vigran Wins State Diving Championship!!!

The Braves Swim and Dive Team made the 3.5 hour trek to Canton, Ohio this week, with coach Ray Noble's IHHS Diving Team arriving on Tuesday evening. Wednesday turned out to be a special day for IHHS, as a Brave climbed to the top of the podium and became a State Champion.

Junior Noah Vigran has been on a mission since he stood one rung below in 2016 when he was the Ohio D2 State Runnerup. This time, he snagged an early lead in the prelims, widened the margin in the semis, and then exploded with 2 great dives to close out the finals with a 78 point margin of victory.

Annie Garrettson and Lexi Magenheim were the girls' State Diving Qualifiers. While neither made it to the podium, both sophomores represented IHHS in stellar fashion all season long, and both will be back in 2018 for another shot at the prize.

The Swim Team rolled into Canton on Wednesday afternoon, led by their coaches John Galvin and Molly Hazelbaker.  After Wednesday night and Thursday morning warmup swims, they were ready for the cacophonous sweatbox that is Canton McKinley's Natatorium. 2,500 spectators packed the place and cheered for 4 hours of great swimming.

At Thursday's preliminary competition, the boys' 200 Medley Relay team kicked off the night the right way, qualifying for the finals. The relay team consisted of Joe Dowling (back), Sam Okum (breast), Nick Bulas (fly), and Devin Edwards (free). They came back the next night and had a great finals race, leapfrogging 3 higher seeded teams to grab 13th place in the State.  Junior Max Eihausen swam 2 individual events in prelims, and he qualified for the finals in both the 200 free and 500 free. Max came back strong in Friday's finals, dropping time in both events and further lowering his IHHS record in the 500 free. Max took 11th in the State in the 500, and 14th in the 200. Congrats to Max!

State Qualifiers Magenheim, Rice, Yin, Jutze, Lau (not pictured)Jillian Rice made it to the State Championships in the 500 free, and while she narrowly missed qualifying for Friday's finals, she capped off a great freshman year with a strong swim.

Junior Joe Dowling was a State Qualifier in the 100 back after a great season. Joe didn't make the final, but I have no question that he will in 2018 given his big time drops since last season. Joe also did a great job as a team captain this year, and even amazingly convinced his relay teammates to pose for a picture for the parents on the pool deck, a shocking turn of events.

The girls' 400 Free Relay Team raced hard in Thursday's prelims, finishing just 3 spots out of a Finals spot. The team consisted of Brianna Yin, Jillian Rice, Hailey Magenheim, and Mary Kate Jutze.

The boys' 400 Free Relay Team also finished 3 spots out of the finals, a disappointment that will serve as motivation for the next year. The relay consisted of Max Eihausen, Sam Okum, Nick Bulas, and Joe Dowling.

As a team, the Braves finished 15th in the State in D2, a great accomplishment given their youth. The 2016-17 season was a great one for the Swim and Dive Teams. The coaches and senior leaders set the tone in establishing a "team" culture, the underclassman added some raw talent, Noah Vigran grabbed "The Ring" as a State Champion, Max Eihausen broke 2 school records, and the boys won the CHL for the first time in 22 years.

It's time to savor the year's accomplishments, set some goals for next year, and then immediately get to work on strength training to set the table for a great 2017-18 season.

Go Braves!
