2017-18 IHHS Swim & Dive Team Season Preview

The 2016-17 season was a very good one for the IHHS Swim & Dive Team. The boys won the CHL Championship for the first time in 22 years, and the girls took 3rd at the League Championships. Max Eihausen broke 2 school records in the 200m and 500m freestyle events, and the team gained invaluable experience at the State Championships.

Noah Vigran won the Ohio D2 State Diving Championship in dominating fashion. The girls' Dive Team sent 3 members to the State Championship.

The 2017-18 AquaBraves return 15 swimmers from both the boys and girls squads. The Dive team returns Stanford Dive Team bound senior Noah Vigran and the top 4 Lady Braves' divers from last year in junior Lexi Magenheim, junior Annie Garretson, senior Vi Robertson, and senior Makenna Hack.

Returning State Swimming Championship participants on the boys' side are seniors Joe Dowling, Max Eihausen, and Sam Okum, along with sophomores Nick Bulas and Devin Edwards. Sophomore Will Taylor has dropped a lot of time this Fall at club meets and will be a key point scorer for the Braves. The Braves' depth was key to their league championship last year, and it will be in abundance once again, with 9 other returning athletes, in addition to 11 incoming freshmen. This team has great senior leadership from Dowling, Eihausen, Okum, and Jake Pearson, which will be important with freshmen and sophomores making up 70% of the team.

The girls will only have 1 returning club swimming senior this season, Kate Lewis, with 3 total seniors on the team. Returning State qualifiers on the girls' team are sophomore Jillian Rice and junior Brianna Yin. Other potential point scoring returners include junior Caroline Sullivan and sophomore Liv Riggs. If the girls want to improve on their 3rd place finish in the CHL from last season, they will need contributions from their 8 other returning teammates and their 5 incoming freshmen.

As for the state of the boys' competition in the CHL, Wyoming, as always, will be the chief obstacle. That said, both Wyoming and rival Mariemont suffered key losses to graduation, and if the Braves train hard for the next 3 months, they stand a good chance to repeat as CHL Champs.

The girls of the CHL are again up against the Mariemont HS juggernaut, and the Mariemont girls will again challenge for the State Championship. Wyoming was one rung above the Braves on the podium last season, and while they suffered some losses to graduation, so did the Braves. It will take a lot of hard work for the Lady Braves to overtake Wyoming, but it can be done.

The Dive Team is again in position for great things this season, both in the league and at the State Championships. Noah Vigran is the favorite to win the CHL, and he has a great shot at back to back State Championships. The girls are also the favorites in the CHL and they look to do even greater damage at State this season.

The Braves Swim Team will be led by new coaches Brandon Voorhies and Jack German.

The Dive Team will again be led by long time Coach Ray Noble.

In summary, 2017-18 looks to be a great one for the IHHS Swim & Dive Teams. The season kicks off against Mariemont on Dec. 5 at their pool, followed by a meet against Seven Hills HS.

Come out to the meets this season to cheer on your Braves.
