AquaBraves Win Sectionals! 24 Braves advance to District Championships!

The Indian Hill Swim Team continued their fantastic season as they rolled into the Mason Natatorium to compete in the Ohio SW Sectional

Championships this weekend. At stake was the chance to advance to the SW District Championships this Friday at Miami University. The Dive Team had already swept the top spots on their podium with Noah Vigran and Lexi Magenheim each again seizing 1st place. The Natatorium was overflowing and more than a bit warm, lol, but the crowd noise never waned throughout the meet.

Sectionals are a strange meet for the uninitiated, with the swimmers beginning to taper their training intensity, in order to rest their bodies and to build their strength and reserves for the District and State Championships. As a result, they do not attempt to swim their best, just good enough to advance and to secure a fast lane for the following week's District Meet.

The Braves' boys again came out on fire, and while they played it smart and only did what they had to do to advance to Districts, they still easily won the Sectional team title. 16 of the guys advanced to Districts in individual events. All 3 relays qualified for Districts.

Individual District Meet Qualifiers are:

  • 50 Free: Joe Dowling, Dan Edmonson, Devin Edwards, Owen Norwell
  • 100 Free: Nick Bulas, Edmonson, Edwards, Norwell
  • 200 Free: Saraus Anand, Max Eihausen, Jake Pearson, Will Taylor
  • 500 Free: Eihausen, Pearson, Taylor
  • 200 IM: Will Ford, Jon Weisfelder, Gabe Yin
  • 100 Fly: Sam Okum (Weisfelder alternate)
  • 100 Back: Bulas, Nick Cech, Dowling, Ben Starkey
  • 100 Breast: Will Campa, Ford, Okum, Yin

Top 3 Sectional Performers were:

  • Nick Bulas: 2nd 100 Back, 2nd 100 Free
  • Will Campa: 3rd 100 Breast
  • Devin Edwards: 2nd 50 Free, 3rd 100 Free
  • Will Ford: 3rd 200 IM
  • Will Taylor: 2nd 500 Free, 2nd 200 Free

The 400 Free Relay team maintained their momentum, winning in dominating fashion. They are seeded 2nd in next Friday's District Championship and they are poised for a shot at the 22-year-old IHHS record at Districts and State. If they can average a 49.39 100 split time, it is theirs. It should be fun to watch them compete this week at Miami University against Seven Hills with Greg Kalin and Bellbrook led by Cody Bybee.

The 200 Free Relay team (Joe Dowling, Dan Edmonson, Owen Norwell, Devin Edwards) is now seeded 7th at Districts. The 200 Medley Relay team (Nick Bulas, Sam Okum, Max Eihausen, Dan Edmonson is seeded 8th at Districts. Both relays are capable of making it to the State Championship, but they need to take another step up as they are both "on the bubble" heading into Districts.

The Lady Braves also had a terrific Sectional Meet, sending 9 swimmers on to Districts. The 200 Medley Relay team set the tone in the first race on Saturday, blazing to a 1:54.42 3rd place finish, good for the 3rd seed at next week's District Meet. They are poised for a great shot to qualify for the State Championships. The relay was composed of Jasmin Lau on backstroke, Liv Riggs on breaststroke, Jillian Rice on fly, and Brianna Yin on the anchor free leg. The 400 Free relay also looked good, finishing 4th, which puts them in the 5th seed at Districts. The 200 Free Relay Team was 5th at Sectionals, and they are the alternate qualifier at Districts. Both the 400 Free and Medley relays look like they have a good shot to make it to Canton heading into Districts, as they are trending up.

Individual District Meet Qualifiers for the girls' team are:

  • 50 Free: Caroline Sullivan
  • 200 Free: Kate Lewis
  • 500 Free: Kate Lewis, Jillian Rice
  • 200 IM: Liv Riggs
  • 100 Fly: Jasmin Lau, Jillian Rice, Brianna Yin
  • 100 Back: Jasmin Lau, Brianna Yin, Caroline Sullivan
  • 100 Breast: Maggie Jutze, Liv Riggs

Top 3 Sectional Performers were:

  • Jasmin Lau: 2nd 100 Fly
  • Jillian Rice: 3rd 500 Free, 3rd 100 Fly

24 Braves will ride the wave into Oxford this Friday where the Ohio SW District Championships await. Statewide, 128 athletes will compete in each event in their respective Districts and the Top 24 will advance to the Ohio State Swim & Dive Championships.

In summary, the AquaBraves did what they have done all season long. They took care of business, brought their team spirit, and put themselves in a great position heading into the District Championships this Friday. Noah Vigran and Lexi Magenheim are Sectional Diving Champions. The Braves' Boys are Sectional Team Champions.

It is time for 4 days of tapered practice, lots of sleep, and good nutrition, hydration, and health. Do those things, and good things are going to happen come Friday.

In the words of Caleb Followill, "Ride out the wave", Braves!
