The CHL Cross Country Championships were held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Sharon Woods. Indian Hill had an outstanding day! The girls won the CHL Championship and our boys team finished third.
On paper, the girls race was a toss up between Indian Hill and archrival Wyoming. In their last head to head meeting at the Mason Invitational, the Cowboys beat our Braves by 20 points. The CHL winner would be the team that wanted it more, and that is what our Lady Braves did. Elizabeth Heinbach (18:33.15) won the race destroying the course and meet record by 31 seconds, and was named CHL Runner Of The Year. Elena Horton (19:48) was third and Adrian Horton (20:30) finished sixth. Statically, that is where they should have finished. To win the championship depended on how the rest of the team performed. Annabel Reich (12th, 21:26) and Sabrina Bulas (18th, 22:04) were up to the challenge improving their season personal records by 11 and 21 seconds respectively. Lauren Vanatsky (22nd, 22:43) bested her previous course record by one second and Kathleen Heinbach (24th, 22:57) finished the 5K course just 4 seconds behind her personal course record to put Indian Hill ahead of Wyoming by 7 points. The CHL Championship cemented Indian Hill's lock on first place on the Enquirer's Division ll-lll Coaches poll.
The boys race came down to a shootout between powerhouses Mariemont and Wyoming with those two teams dominating the first 10 finishers. Mason McClay (15th, 18:07), Joe Majchszak (18th, 18:24), Austin Hughes (19th, 18:24), Josh Leibel (24th, 18:42), and Wells Coalflee (26th, 18:46) all ran new personal course records. Connor von Korff (29th, 19:18) and John Stephen (31st, 19:37) rounded out the Braves scoring to put us in third place, which is the best finish for the boys in five years.
A jubilant Coach Savage was named CHL Coach Of The Year.
